The Youth Action Leadership Council (YALC) is an innovative leadership development program launched in 2023 to support young people in growing their skills, knowledge, and confidence to create meaningful change in their communities. Designed for participants impacted by systemic inequities, YALC provides a comprehensive curriculum in civics education, presentation development, service-learning project development, and experiential learning, offering young leaders the tools they need to thrive and advocate for justice.
Over the course of the year, YALC members engage in transformative experiences that combine education, skill-building, and hands-on advocacy. In the Civics Education segment, participants explore their roles in society through topics like leadership styles, servant leadership philosophy, worldview analysis, structural racism, and government structures. Building on this foundation, Presentation Development focuses on developing public speaking and debate skills, equipping participants to engage in direct advocacy efforts such as supporting the Youth Justice and Opportunities Act and Communities Not Cages campaigns.
The program culminates in Service-Learning Project Development, where participants take ownership of collaborative projects, including social media campaigns, community service initiatives, newsletters, and events like Know Your Rights workshops and a Youth Symposium. Throughout the program, Experiential Learning opportunities expose participants to real-world advocacy, restorative justice practices, and community involvement through events such as lobbying days, health fairs, and public debates.
YALC members have participated in impactful events, from rallying at the New York State Capitol for criminal justice reform to testifying before the City Council at youth budget hearings. Their advocacy amplifies youth voices and fosters a deeper understanding of the power of community-led initiatives.
